Ten things I always forget I love about Los Angeles

Posted by admin on Jan 27, 2009 in lists

la-beachDespite having spent one fabulous year living in the hallowed state of California, my memory is not what it used to be, and everytime I return I realize why I’m still devastated the UK isn’t eligible for the green card lottery. Here are my top ten things about life in the USA

1. Mexican food is everywhere. And I mean everywhere. You have fast food joints (del Taco, El Pollo Loco/ Baja Fresh) nice restaurants and sweet bistros. Unlike London where there are about five overpriced places you really have to hunt for, burritos and enchiladas are a way of life.

2. The plumbing. Yes, I know this is a weird one, but seriously- all the toilets flush- ALWAYS!! And they have toilet seat covers as well which makes a trip to the McDonalds loos a lot more palatable.

3.Frozen Yogurt.

It’s yummy, creamy, low fat AND and you can choose from the likes of Pinkberry, Red Mango and the amazing array in west Hollywood. You get around ten flavours to choose from, and a huge pot is fat free and under 100 calories. Sold! (New York does have Tasti D-Lite, but the UK has zero shops dedicated to fro-yo).

teddy-bear-coat

I’m sure this will never make it into our stores OR the catwalk, but hey, it’s Friday and this teddy bear heavy coat certainly put a smile on my face! You can check out other creations by designer Sebastian Errazuriz here.

I just hope none of the bears suffered too much…

Words I’ve been learning

Posted by admin on Jan 21, 2009 in random

dictionaryI’m not ashamed to admit there are many words I don’t l know. Part of being such a ridiculous reader (3 books a week has often rasied eyebrows) means that I come across a wide variety of words I’m unfamiliar with. In the flow of the sentences they seem understandable, but can I use them in a conversation? Um, probably not. So I’ve taken to writing them down and looking them up, and have decided that Encarta Dictionary is better than Dictionary.com and Wikipedia for a definition (and briefer).

Here are the words I’m learning at the moment- and don’t laugh, as I know you have your own moments of mental blankness as well.

-Polemic

1. Passionate argument: a passionate, strongly worded, and often controversial argument against or, less often, in favor of somebody or something

2. Passionate critic: somebody who engages in a passionate dispute about or argues passionately against somebody or something Read more…

Scratch and sniff wallpaper recreates my Willy Wonka dreams

Posted by admin on Jan 19, 2009 in random

scrath-wallpaper When I was younger Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was one of my favourite films. I wanted to inhale fizzy drinks to make me fly (minus the killer fans),consume sweets that were a three course dinner, and of course, lick wallpaper that tasted yummy. Well one out of three ain’t bad, so say hello to Flavor Paper.

This rather vibrant looking stuff comes in a multitude of flavours, from fruit medley to bananas, and tutti frutti. Their website doesn’t give prices, but seems to imply that they’ll make ANYTHING flavourfull, so you can have scented flock designs if garish cherry panels aren’t your thing.

Simply scratch and sniff the panels, and voila, a burst of fruity freshness will assualt your olfactory senses!

The Internet: Putting camera repair shops out of business!

Posted by admin on Jan 19, 2009 in technology

broken-camersMy Canon IXUS died yesterday. It’s pretty devastating as I love that camera, and especially as it wasn’t preceded by a sharp shock to the floor, a basin of water or even an over zealous five year old. No, all of a sudden an error message appeared saying ‘Lens error, restart camera’ and I can’t turn it on anymore as the lens moves not at all.

So what would you do? Curse, cry and go to a repair shop? Well once that was the only option but seeing as we’re so web savvy the first place I turned to was the internet, where it seems a multitude of people have had the same error message.

Five things I gained AND lost at CES 2009

Posted by admin on Jan 14, 2009 in lists, technology

lasvegassignCES 2009 was quite an experience. I met some amazing people  from, blogs I really respect (Boing Boing Gadgets, Oh Gizmo and Chip Chick being the highlights) and got to see far more TV’s than one human should ever have to deal with. I saw demo’s of Windows 7, and Steve Ballmer attempt to be young by saying cool approx 27 times in his keynote speech. But what else did Vegas mean to me? I’ve summed it up for you in a  handy little list.

Gain:

1.USB sticks. More than I’ll ever want or need and most under 1GB.

OKCupid.com says I’m a Wild Rose through inappropriate questions

Posted by admin on Jan 13, 2009 in random

wild-roseI haven’t done a dating/personality test in years, but when the lovely Ann insisted I try one, I thought ‘why not?’. Little did I know I’d be deciding whether I’d choose my survival over ten strangers.. or over ten thousand strangers!

Add a couple of questions about just how much money it would take to buy me and it was a fairly uncomfortable experience. The results are in though, and I’m the ‘Wild Rose’, also known as the Random Brutal Love Dreamer.

See what that means after the jump.
