Blogging vs honesty: Does social media restrict your online rants?

Posted by admin on Mar 7, 2009 in news, opinion

privacy_pahI had a couple of things in mind when I started this blog. I wanted an online portal filled with Zara style wisdom and wit, where I was as comfortable writing about my latest obsession with edamame beans as I was au fait with the latest eBook on the market. I liked the idea of having an outlet to write for fun; that is to say choosing to write about topics I like rather than just creating content in my working hours.

Obviously I realized there would be a certain amount of overlap, seeing as I love technology and will happily trawl my RSS feeds at weekends, but I liked the idea of being able to spout freely on any topic under the sun. And yes, the idea that people could read my work and comment on it seemed quite attractive as well (I’m a bit of an egotist).

But then I wanted to expand on the basic blog idea- I wanted to display ALL aspects of my life, including a recent press area, AND have a portfolio section with clips from all the different outlets I’ve written for. Essentially I wanted an online CV for myself should I be hunting down freelance commissions/new jobs, and something for employers to search when they Google me.

With this in mind, suddenly I’m aware that I can’t vent as freely as I’d like, or if I do, it probably won’t reflect well on me. It’s not like I have a heroin addiction or a secret lesbian lifestyle to cover up, but the everyday ventings that I make now have to take into account the fact that the web is NOT a private place.  Anything I publish is open to scrutiny and judgement from others- and rightly so. LED glasses are great for undercover reading

Posted by admin on Mar 6, 2009 in books, geekery

read-glassesIt’s been quite a while since I was sternly told to turn my light off and go to sleep, but I still remember the agony of being half way through a nail biting chapter and being forced into darkness despite my protests.

I’d smuggle torches up to bed, but they left the books with a strange glow, AND possibly resulted in my prescription now being -7!  Well these glasses wouldn’t aid my vision, but they would make night time reading a little easier, as they feature LED lights  above each lense. They’d keep my eyes from straining at night, and they’d also solve my reading-when walking -at -night-problem, but I realize that’s probably only applicable for me.

They’re available at a strength of 0- +2.5,  and you can also opt for a old lady style tortoiseshell print or plain black. Is it sad that I want a pair?

They’re $29.99 from Catalog Favorites.

A sweet treat for troubled times- Haagen Dazs introduces the Five range

Posted by admin on Mar 6, 2009 in news

haagendazfive

I like ice cream. A LOT. And Haagen Dazs have just introduced the Five range which has really made my day. As well as delicious sounding flavours (Get me some Brown Sugar now!) each ice cream only has five ingredients- and they don’t include any of the dextrose-blahblah blah stuff we’ve come to expect from an ingredient list, just good ol fashioned cream, milk and sugar.

Not that I care what goes in it, but it’s nice to have sugar AND be smug at the same time! Cheers to Bitch Buzz for the heads up.

Books I’ve recently read (Warning: Sci-Fi alert!)

Posted by admin on Mar 2, 2009 in books

books_sci_fiI read a lot. Possibly too much. I read to such an extent that I plough through books quicker than lovers/TV shows/interesting conversations and have had numerous encounters with lamp posts when I walk along reading.  I’ve bemoaned the lack of street lighting as it means I can’t read properly when walking home at night, and I read so much that I find myself accidentally re-reading novels as as I’ve temporarily forgotten the first few chapters.

So I’ve decided to keep a record or everything I read from now on, and maybe even review them (but don’t hold your breath). So here are the books (mainly Sci-Fi) I’ve read these last few weeks.

Science Fiction

Palace by Katharine Kerr and Mark Kreighbaum

Your average epic tale of a girl born into destiny and power, who starts life in the ‘Pleasure Sect’ of the city and ends up as the accidental heiress of the world. Throw in some cybernetics and gene splicing and you have a tale of intrigue, erotica, and epic adventuring.

The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury

A selection of stories based around the moving tattoos on a body.

The Man with The Golden Torc by Simon R Green

Shaman Bond a.k.a Eddie Drood keeps the world safe from the creatures of the night.. till he learns he may be one as well! Simon R Green returns to form with riveting dialogue, breathtaking action and fun loving frolics. Read more…

The Pink Princess: For everything a schizophrenic princess needs

Posted by admin on Mar 2, 2009 in technology

pink_princessAre you kidding me? Sure, I like the colour pink and I unashamedly work for a site which uses baby pink as the main colour, but we don’t try and pretend a woman’s life will be complete if she lives in a life size Barbie dream house. And take a look at this site. It’s not the first of its kind and it won’t be the last but I’m currently outraged as I was directed to it through the reputed techie website Tech Digest! Read more…
