Shoe-shoop be doop : What do graffiti artists and hairdressers have in common?

Posted by admin on Sep 20, 2009 in news, style

So many heels, so little time. In the last couple of weeks I’ve discovered a couple of brands I’ve never heard of before, and my PayPal account has been getting sadder and sadder. Whilst I’ve long since been an advocate of Steve Madden shoes (thankfully now on our shores) and have a penchant for New Look and River Island footwear (well priced, long lasting and bizarrely comfortable) I’m always a sucker for something shiny and new. These shoes stray away from the norm as they all bring something a little different to the footwear scene, and manage to be unique without becoming unwearable or overly gimmicky. [And in answer to the above question- they're all shoe designers!]

Sister Act The Musical : London Theatre Review

Posted by admin on Sep 16, 2009 in opinion

sisteractThe sign of a great show is that you leave half-stepping to the closing routine whilst trying desperately to remember the lyrics of the catchiest song. When I went to Wicked I didn’t stop humming ‘Popular’ for about a week, but Sister Act had me feeling less than excited. I left the show raving about the amazing production values; the interchangeable scenery, the beautifully bewildering set display, (which converted the stage into a nunnery, brothel and church scene), and the way it took place without a whisper of machinery.

But no humming was involved at all.

But why was this? I loved the film, which was the reason I decide to go, and the fact that Whoopi Goldberg, star of the original, had a hand in the production seemed like a good sign. Problem was that the musical didn’t contain any of the tunes I loved so much, so rather than a nostalgic trip back into my childhood, I was greeted with a re-jigged storyline with a completely new soundtrack. British Airways as you’ve never seen them before

Have been meaning to post this for a while, and a wet and windy evening is the perfect excuse. I clipped this from the London Paper , and isn’t it amazing? Can you believe the uniforms they had to wear? I’m not sure which I find funnier- the 60’s flower power air hostess or the 70’s style cheap looking mini dress! I just wish they’d included some 80’s power dressing- but I found you a pic anyways… Read more…

Demeter fragrances finds the recession helping sales of ‘Baby Powder’ and ‘Dirt’ perfumes

Beloved of drama queens and divas who like to walk on the wild side, Demeter fragrances are known for being kooky. Think of their scents as Comme des Garcons perfumes for the tween market and you’ll understand what I mean. You’d think their novelty range of fragrances would suffer in a recession, but it seems the very culture of doom and gloom is infusing their customers with a need for quirk and lightheartedness.

At the moment they’re not readily available in the UK, but their library of over 300 scents is available online and they sell a lot through US drug stores. However they’re adding to their line as they feel the climate is receptive to their unique blend of strange scents. To clarify- their stable includes scents with such names as Play-Doh, Laundromat, Dirt, Rain, Fiery Curry and Funeral Home.

As you can imagine they’re not to everyone’s tastes but there’s something to be said for the sheer amount they produce, and the the wildly inappropriate names and the images they conjure up. Just what would a Redhead in Bed smell like? Read more…
