Musings on Museums: Hidden treasures for home decor heaven!

Posted by admin on Feb 16, 2010 in random, style

Due to the fact that I’ll soon be the proud rentee of a one bed flat all to myself, I’ve become a little bit obsessed with home furnishings of late. Whether it’s fantastic chandeliers, wall stickers or even those weirdly rounded IKEA rugs everyone seems to have, they’re all somehow on my radar. One place I never expected to find seriously stylish products was museums though, as my idea of gift shops tended to verge towards staid postcards of Victorian women, or the multicoloured marbles you find at the Science Museum.  A recent trip round some the Museum of London disabused me of this notion however, as amongst the myriads of ugly tea towels and books that will remain sealed on coffee tables forever lay a treasure trove of accessories. From lovely lamps to cool furniture, museums seem to be the untapped destination for quirky furnishings, and there are even geeky treasures too!

Here are my favourites.

The Museum of London has some seriously desirable decor, and I’m really bowled over by their great coffee table cum street sign mashup. Their throw pillows and ironic tea towels are also pretty sweet. Read more…

Once you pop, you can’t stop! Bubble wrap 2010 calendar

Posted by admin on Jan 31, 2010 in geekery, random

bubble-calendar

Say hello to a 2010 wall calendar with a difference- you mark off the days by popping the bubble wrap covered date! The difficulty would be managing just to pop one date per day- I wonder if this would go the way of advent calendars, where you can’t control yourself? Suddenly the actual date would become more abstract than real- but this would be great gift for any geek ( or toddler with self control issues). Considering it’s now the end of Jan you would have the satisfaction of popping off a whole month in one sitting.

Posted by admin on Jan 18, 2010 in geekery, news, random

lisasimpsongivingheadWhat does the above look like to you? The innocent 2012 logo or some salacious Simpsons behaviour by our beloved Lisa Simpson? Some Facebook users are so convinced this image has a pornographic slant they’ve started a group denouncing this, which currently has 702,776 fans, all convinced Lisa is doing unseemly things to Bart. What say you?

Seventeen Salt and pepper shakers with a twist

Posted by admin on Dec 13, 2009 in lists, random

I don’t cook, but I do use condiments, and as a lovey ex-colleague of mine can attest, ‘Everything tastes better with a little pepper’. Here are some interesting/decorative/crazy ways in which to contain these humble spices. And why did I choose to write about these? Let’s just say I was having a strange day. Read more…

Take note of your notebook

Posted by admin on Dec 4, 2009 in geekery, random

I may be a digital fiend, hopelessly connected to my computer and the web, but I still heart the simple notebook. There’s something about jotting down thoughts rather than typing them which is inescapably pleasurable ( and in my case undecipherable) so I found this guide to defining your notebook style very entertaining.

Barbie releases her inner Bitch

Posted by admin on Nov 28, 2009 in beauty, random

evelyn-davis-backstabbing-barbie

The idea of the backstabbing blonde girl is hardly an original idea, as the image of the bitchy blonde has been perpetuated in literature spanning the last couple of centuries, from Jane Austen’s Emma to the teenage bitchiness seen in books like Sweet Valley High. The blonde butter-wouldn’t-melt stereotype remains nonetheless (it’s a Madonna thing), with the advent of Barbie’s 50th anniversary seeing the archetypal blonde bimbo adorned in a variety of high couture.

Perhaps it’s time to celebrate Barbie’s inner psyche, and let the world see her true colours? After all, how can you revere something that you don’t truly understand, and though Barbie may be beautiful it’s important to see she’s multi-faceted.

The Altered Barbie collective have created a selection of artworks and still life’s based around the familiar Barbie figurine, which show in her in slightly less Mattel approved positions. All images are displayed annually at the Altered Barbie Exhibit in San Francisco, which draws an eclectic crowd of artists and Barbie fanatics.

The show uses clever imagery to subvert the notion of the Barbie doll, and juxtapose different realities on the iconic figure. I find the following images intriguing, interesting, and ever so slightly disturbing, so applaud them for the creativeness/ inner rage. Either way, you’ll never look at the doll the same way again. The D’oh confessions

Posted by admin on Nov 12, 2009 in random

homer-doh-moment-Trying to use my oyster card to open my front door.

-Feeling like a rebel when I microwave a meal for 5 minutes, instead of the suggested 2 minutes then stir, then 3 minutes.

-Asking what the baby girl in Starbucks was called, and told it was John.

-Holding the phone away from my ear when I speak to my mother and then  going ‘Hmmm’  every 5 minutes or so (and she never notices).

-Having 3 energy drinks in a row and going temporarily blind.

{Hopefully I’m not alone in all of these}
