Growing up I was always told not to play with my food, a lesson that clearly wasn’t drummed home to the artists involved in the International Food Design Society exhibition. They created an exhibit which used food as the basis of exciting and innovative artworks, everything from edible coffee cups to a skintight bird feeding suit to let you get all Mary Poppins with pigeons.
I like the thinking behind the event, as food shouldn’t be something static which is consumed- let’s evolve the edible! Why not have chocolate jewellery for diabetics or sugar stirrers (oh wait, we have those).
This exhibition was show in London last month, and saw a collective of artists worldwide get together and display their best pieces. I’m in love with the ‘cheese sharpener’ (see bottom image) which easily allows you to add artistic cheese garnishes to your food with minimum effort. Other cool ideas were shown- isn’t the chocolate calorie counter cool? Pull off a piece of choccie and the calories are (scarily) inscribed upon the slice- it’s a whole new way to think about portion control.

There are many, many strange things that exist in the world. Hey, it’s all healthy expression right, whether you like yodelling on weekends or stalking people with leg casts (abasiophilia). I’d just about got my head around the concept of Air Guitar and its related championship events when I heard about the Air Sex World Championships, which is basically Air Guitar without the guitar and with people, well, you get the idea.
The thing I find odd is how seriously people take this sport, with forums upon forums of practise tips, video ideas, etc- culminating in a massive event that takes place in Texas. Read more…

I have doodled pretty much my whole life. From the moment I could hold a Crayola I was busy coloring in sheets of paper, the walls, anything I could reach really, much to my parents chagrin. As I got older I moved away from walls and onto textbooks, illustrating the margin with badly drawn cartoon figures modelling fashions. As an adult I still doodle constantly, as it’s something I literally can’t stop. I’ll leave a meeting full of ideas, notes and crazy ass flowers in the margin of my notebook. I’ve seen a fair few doodle friendly designs, but this duvet is definitely my favourite. Read more…

I’ve never been particularly deft with my hands, as I tend to be rather clumsy, and many broken objects will agree with me. I’ve always been fascinated with origami though, but have generally lacked the patience to learn this particular skill- till now! I just discovered that you can get floating origami, where you construct shapes such as birds and boats that will FLOAT in the bath. I’d always thought origami= paper=sink, but I guess they’re made out of some non absorbent material. A kit contains a how to guide, a selection of papers to work with and the kit is really cheap- on NPW for £5.95! How can I resist having a go?

Growing Up Skipper Doll
Barbie was my doll of choice when I was a little girl, blithely giving me a false impression of how my body would develop and a lifetime of insecurity. I’ve just discovered I got off lightly though, as were I ten years older I’d of had to contend with Growing Up Skipper. Skipper is commonly (well, in little girl circles) known as Barbie’s younger sister, and if you’re lucky you can have great fun making Barbie babysit her and generally act preachy and grown-uppy.
In 1975 Growing Up Skipper was released, a doll that would change the innocent face of Mattel forever, and give a whole new meaning to those awkward ‘I must, I must, I must increase my bust’ exercises. This is because when Skipper’s arm was rotated her torso would lengthen and breasts would appear on on her chest. Seriously.
The idea was that this was the doll that would ‘mature with you’, and the marketing referred to her as being ‘Two Dolls in One, Twice as Much Fun!’.

{National Velvet was a tad confused at the latest foal to hit the stables}
Now I don’t know too much about beauty pageants per se, my main experience is relying on the fact that I’ve watched way to many ‘Next Top Model’s, and at 17 years old was Runner Up Carnival Queen for the London Borough of Barnet. I lost the crown due to the fact that I naively said my favourite food was ‘Pizza Hut!’ (hey, I was 17) when the event was sponsored by McDonalds, but I have some idea of the intricacies of the judging process, and the hoops you go through to try and get their attention.

Pet shows have always been a bit of an odd event, as unless it’s something like dressage for horses, it seems to boil down to ‘My dog is better than yours’, cue lots of shine spray and ribbons. Fair enough if you do it sensibly, the dogs won’t mind being pampered, and everyone likes a trophy, but the world of Creative Grooming is so far removed from reality that I can’t decide if it’s villainous, voyueristic or simply vacuous.
Creative Grooming is the art of dressing up your pet to LOOK LIKE ANOTHER ANIMAL and they don’t do this with cute little kitten ear hats or drawn on whiskers, I’m talking full on body dye and weird shavings!! And now it’s here in the UK… Read more…

I love a good Japanese beauty gadget, as they have pioneered some of the strangest products in the world. The Beau Bust Roller is the latest in a long line up of uncomfortable looking products designed to help you increase your bust size. Forget about Wonderbra’s and chicken fillets, this is an electronic breast stimulator which is designed to be rolled across the boobs. This torturous looking device is designed to react with a gel used across the area, and together this machine is meant to promote growth and firmness.
Quite apart from thefact that the BODY DOESN’T WORK LIKE THAT, it looks like it would be pretty painful as well. I’m not sure how desperate you would have to be to invest in one of these, but it would have to be verging on insane, as not only is this unlikely to make any difference, it’s also pricey and fricking HUGE- you couldn’t just leave it lying around the room! Get it for $116 from the Japan Trend Shop.
